Building Water Safety from the Start: Infant and Toddler Survival Lessons at SwimKids
Building Water Safety from the Start
At SwimKids, we believe that introducing water safety at an early age is one of the best gifts you can give your child. Thatβs why our Infant and Toddler Survival Lessons are designed specifically for babies and toddlers aged 6 months to 2 years. These lessons focus on equipping your little ones with essential survival skills that could one day save their lives.
The Core Skills We Teach
Our program emphasizes five key survival skills:
- Holding Breath: We start by teaching your child how to hold their breath underwater, laying the foundation for all other water activities.
- Swimming Short Distances: Even at a young age, we guide children to swim short distances, boosting their confidence and comfort in the water.
- Floating Unassisted for 10 Seconds: Floating is a vital skill for water safety, and we work diligently to help your child master this.
- Turning from Stomach to Back to Float: This skill ensures your child can safely roll to their back in a water emergency
- Turning to Find the Wall: We teach children how to locate the edge of the pool, enabling them to find safety on their own.
Our Unique Approach: Balancing Safety and Confidence
What sets SwimKids apart is our proven curriculum that perfectly balances safety with building your childβs confidence. We understand that learning to swim can be a daunting process, especially for young children. Our experienced instructors use nonverbal hand cues to guide your child through each lesson, creating a consistent, reassuring, and effective learning environment.
Expect a Few Tears: Itβs All Part of the Process
Itβs completely normal for your child to cry at the beginning of these lessons. They might feel uncomfortable, and thatβs okay. This is a critical part of the learning and growth process for both you and your child. Pushing through these difficult moments helps your child develop resilience and, more importantly, acquire the life-saving skills they need.
A Note on Puddle Jumpers and Life Jackets
While it might be tempting to use puddle jumpers or life jackets, these tools often give children a false sense of confidence, encourage improper head positioning, and prevent them from developing the lung capacity and muscle strength necessary for swimming. By investing in SwimKidsβ program, youβre making a long-term investment in your childβs safety and ability to swim independently.
Getting Started
For the best results, we recommend that beginners attend lessons 2x or more per week. This frequency helps reinforce learning, build muscle memory, and boost your childβs confidence in the water.
